5/29/2023 0 Comments Eight perfect murdersSo, overall I rated this novel four stars because even though I wasn’t invested in the characters I truly couldn’t put the book down, I had to know how it ended. The other three characters I didn’t find to be all that likeable either but again they were well thought out and had an impact on the story. I would have liked to have seen more of Agent Gwen Mulvey, she features more in the first half than the second half and I felt her character could have been explored better. The two bookstore employees I feel could have been developed further, they are distinct and personally I felt they were likeable – the only two characters who I felt were likeable in this novel – but they weren’t that interesting. Malcolm, was not a very likeable character I didn’t particularly have strong feelings for or against him but I was still engaged in his story. Although each of the characters had very defined personalities from each other for me it felt like they were lacking in some way. As for characters there are a lot of them, but the main ones are Malcolm Kershaw, his two bookstore employees, FBI Agent Gwen Mulvoy, his old friend Marty Kingship and married couple Brian and Tess Murray.

This was such a novel concept and I loved how the author imagined the mentality of a baby shifter, not to mention the fact that the baby shifters were just adorable. In this book, all sorts of shifters exist from rats, owls and meerkats to jaguars, tigers and wolves, but there are some shifters that though themselves adult shift into an animal counterpart that is still a baby, so instead of shifting into an adult, say, lion they shift into a lion cub. I especially liked the concept of baby shifters in this book. This was one of the first books in which when I finished it, I was like, wasn’t this supposed to be a novel, not realising that I had just thundered past 150+ pages just because of how much I loved reading this one. In fact, Lacan’s seminars and ecrits relate like analysand’s and analyst’s speech in the treatment. It is as if Lacan first directly develops a certain theoretical line in a straightforward way, with all oscillations and blind alleys, and then goes on to condense the result in precise, but compressed ciphers. The paradox pointed out by Jean-Claude Milner is that, in contrast to the usual way of opposing the secret oral teaching to the printed publications for the common people, Lacan’s ecrits are “elitist,” readable only to an inner circle, while his seminars are destined for the large public and, as such, much more accessible. “If one disregards occasional short texts (introductions and afterwords, transcribed improvised interventions and interviews, etc.), Lacan’s oeuvre clearly falls into two groups: seminars (conducted every week during the school-year from 1953 till Lacan’s death, in front of an ever larger public) and é’crits (written theoretical texts). Rather than attempt to summarize and paraphrase what others have said, this post simply offers the following advice/ guidance from the introduction from Slavoj Zizek’s How to Read Lacan. Like desiring itself, one has to be taught how to read Lacan. |
